The Creative Brief.
The MTV World Design Group challenged us to create a consistent design and animation brand identity across MTV’s seven global channels.
Each channel needed to share the core MTV brand spirit, aligned with the “Kill Boring” mantra—visually bold, experimental, and unexpected.
At the same time, the deliverables had to adhere to the main brand’s wireframe and graphic skin templates, while still allowing each channel to feel distinct and tailored to its local audience.
The Project Challenge.
How can MTV’s visual language be made consistent across all channels while allowing each individual channel to maintain its own genre-specific personality? Additionally, how can the design be kept engaging and entertaining for audiences with short attention spans?
Our Solution.
Built around the concept of a “party animal” as the ultimate music fan, we developed genre-specific animal characters that dance, move, and react to the unique energy of each channel.
Consistency is maintained through shared color palettes, typography, and layout systems, while the graphic elements themselves adopt distinct tones tailored to each channel’s identity.
1a. Concept: The party animal
Think of a party animal—the wildest person at concerts, the most energetic at parties, and a true free spirit. They represent the coolest, most rebellious kind of music fan, much like MTV itself.
Now imagine MTV as a virtual reality planet, where each sub-channel exists as a genre-specific continent. Each of these regions is inhabited by “party animals,” serving as a visual metaphor for the diverse music genres and fan communities around the world. While each differs in style and cultural influence, they are unified by the same passion, fandom, and human spirit.
1b. Character development: What does a party animal look like?
The “party animal” is an animated, genre-specific dancing character that unifies the visual identity across each channel. Designed as part of the same visual family as MTV1 and each other, they maintain consistency while expressing distinct individual personalities.
For MTV Rocks, a harder, moodier rock-focused channel, we developed a character constructed from darker drumsticks and guitar picks. It moves in a frenetic, mosh-pit-like manner, capturing the raw energy of the genre rather than referencing any specific band or substyle. This approach reflects how we adapt each character to embody the broader emotional tone of its respective channel.
Early explorations of the party animals were more flat and abstract—digital collage-like forms placed into real-world environments. However, two key limitations emerged: they became too tied to specific locations and connotations, and their flat construction restricted expressive movement and energy.
Through collaboration with the client, we evolved the approach into 3D characters rendered with a graphic treatment. Each design loosely references a real animal aligned with the musical identity of its channel—such as an eel to reflect the fluidity of electronic music, or a crab with a speaker-like shell referencing Jamaican sound system culture. This shift allowed significantly greater flexibility and expressiveness across animation moments.
